Apocalypse Sunsets
Photography, bleach manipulation
2026
Apocalypse Sunset brings together photographs from Sirente’s personal archive with found images collected online—amateur snapshots, travel photographs and anonymous images of people looking at the sky.
Each photograph is altered through a bleaching process that creates stains resembling explosions, celestial impacts, mushroom clouds or unknown atmospheric phenomena. By removing rather than adding to the image, the process transforms moments of beauty and contemplation into scenes of uncertainty.
The sunset becomes suspended between wonder and catastrophe: the same sky can evoke romance, transcendence, wildfire, nuclear explosion or planetary collapse. Bringing together personal and anonymous images, the work reflects on a shared human fascination with the horizon and the uneasy awareness of impermanence.
The resulting images leave the viewer uncertain whether they are witnessing a sunset, an explosion, or the projection of a fear onto the sky.
